Colloidal Bismuth Subcitrate Tablet |
Category: Anti-ulcer agent , Bactericide.
Chemical name: Bismuth subcitrate is
Tripotassium Dicitratobismuthate.
Composition:
Each Film coated tablet contains:
Bismuth subcitrate , corresponding to 120 mg
Bismuth ( lll ) oxide.
Actions:
By influence of gastric acid a precipitate
containing bismuth is formed from colloidal
bismuth subcitrate tablet, which adheres mainly
to the ulcer. Colloidal bismuth subcitrate
tablet, has an antibacterial action against
Helicobacter pylori which causes gastritis.
Physiological effects: In high percentage of patients with gastric or
duodenal ulcer, colloidal bismuth subcitrate
tablet exerts a curative effect while the
percentage of recurrences for duodenal ulcer is comparatively low.
Indications: Gastric and duodenal ulcer.
Contra-indication: Severe renal dysfunction.
Drug interaction: Antacid, and Bismuth
containing drugs.
Precautions:
Antacid and milk should not be taken within half
an hour before, to half an hour after taking
colloidal bismuth subcitrate, because gastric
acids is necessary for the formation of the
protective layer. The absorption of tetracyclines may be reduced when colloidal
bismuth subcitrate is taken concomitantly.
Side-Effects:
Nausea and vomiting have reported with bismuth
subcitrate tablets. Darkening of the tongue has
also been reported and blackening of the stool
is stated to occur. Although there have been no
reports of bismuth encephalopathy following the
use of tripotassium dicitratobismuthate in
recommended doses, this possibility should be
borne in mind following over dosage. Long-term
therapy is not recommended.
Usage in pregnancy:
Consult your doctor before using colloidal
bismuth subcitrate tablet.
Administration and dosage: Colloidal bismuth subcitrate tablets is used for
the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
The usual dose is 2 tablets twice daily or one
tablet 4 times daily taken before food for a
period of 4 weeks extended to 8 weeks if
necessary. Maintenance therapy with colloidal
bismuth subcitrate tablets is not recommended
although treatment may be repeated after a
drug-free interval of 2 months.
How supplied:
Tablets of colloidal bismuth subcitrate are
faint yellow film coated tablets.
They are supplied as boxes of 40 tablets.
